ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

  • Endoplasmic reticulum is mesh like structure which are composed of numerous tube-like structures.
  • They extends from plasma membrane to nuclear membrane.
  • They are responsible to transmission of materials between the cell membrane and nuclear membrane.
  • They are absent in prokaryotic cells and matuared RBC’S of mammals.

There are two types of endoplasmic reticulum. They are:

(a)Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum(RER)

(b)Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum(SER)

(a)ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

  • The endoplasmic reticulum which have rough surface (due to the presence of ribosomes on its surface) is called rough endoplasmic reticulum.
  • They help in the formation of protein.

(b)SMOOTH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

  • The endoplasmic reticulum which have smooth surface are known as smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
  • They help in the formation of lipids
  • They also responsible for the detoxification of the cell.
