CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas it is formed by the incomplete combustion of fuel. We know that hemoglobin present in blood carry oxygen to all body parts. Hemoglobin has more affinity for carbon monoxide than oxygen so it strongly bind with hemoglobin and prevent the transportation of oxygen to brain and other body part.  Due to lack of oxygen, the person can not breath properly and if carbon monoxide is inhaled for long time then the person may become unconscious and it may leads to the death of the person.

HOW TO PROTECT CO(Carbon monoxide) POISONING INDOORS?

There are some measures that we can take to keep emission of CO inside your home to a minimum and minimize the risk of CO poisoning to the occupants(family member) of home. These are:

• The first thing we can install a CO detector at  home. These are battery operated devices and we may need to check/replace it every six months to ensure proper functioning.
• Never use portable chemical heaters, gas range/oven for heating purposes or a generator inside your home. These appliances can build up CO very fast and can increase the risk of CO poisoning.
• When we buy  gas appliances, we make sure that they are properly vented. This will prevent the risk of CO leaking indoors in case the pipes and joints develop a leakage. We must also make sure to buy Gas gas equipment which comes with national testing agency seals.
• Regularly perform checkups on fuel-burning appliances that you use inside your home.
