Osmosis is the process of transmission of water from the region of its higher concentration to the lower concentration through semi-permeable membrane.
Osmosis takes place due to the difference in the water concentration inside and outside medium of the cell.
If the water concentration in the outside medium of the cell is more than medium inside the cell then water present in outside medium move inside the cell and the cell swell up. This type of osmosis is called Endosmosis.
If the water concentration in the outside medium of the cell is more than medium inside the cell then water present in outside medium move inside the cell and the cell shrink. This type of osmosis is called Exosmosis.
Example: The movement of water from in and out of the cell takes place through Osmosis.
(b) DIFFUSION
Diffusion is the process of transmission of any substance (other than water) from the region of its higher concentration to lower concentration.
Example: The movement of O2 and CO2 from in and out of the cell takes place through diffusion.
