MITOCHONDRIA

CLASS-09  | CHAPTER-5  | CELL: THE FUNDAMENTAL UNIT OF LIFE

MITOCHONDRIA

(a) STRUCTURE OF MITOCHONDRIA
  • Mitochondria is a capsule like structure.
  • It has a double membrane structure.
  • The space between the  membrane is known as the inter membrane structure.
  • Inner membrane is projected into numerous finger like structure called Cristae.
  • It has its own DNA and Ribosomes.
  • Mitochondria is the site of cellular respiration. Energy released during cellular respiration is stored in mitochondria in the form of ATP(Adenosine tri phosphate) and distribute to various organelle whenever required. Therefore it is known as the Power House of the cell.
(b) FUNCTIONS OF MITOCHONDRIA
  • It is the site of cellular respiration.
  •  It generate energy for various activities of the cell.
  • Mitochondria have their own DNA and ribosomes and can synthesis proteins.
