GOLGI BODIES/ GOLGI COMPLEX / GOLGI APPARATUS

GOLGI BODY / GOLGI COMPLEX / GOLGI APPARATUS

  • Golgi body was first discovered by Camillo Golgi.
  • It is made up of a stack of membrane bounded bodies known as cisternae.
  • It is located in the cytoplasm next to the Endoplasmic reticulum near the nucleus.
  • Golgi apparatus is responsible for transporting, modifying, and packaging proteins and lipids into vesicles for delivery to targeted destinations.
  • It plays a major roles in the production of lysosomes.
  • It is involved in the synthesis and secretion of hormones and enzymes.
  • The number of golgi bodies vary from cell to cell. Cells that secrete hormones and enzymes have a large number of Golgi bodies.
